    Richard Geiger (Austria, 1870 – 1945) was a highly respected painter, draftsman and graphic artist, who studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Académie Julian in Paris.  By 1896 he had settled in Budapest.  He initially worked as a draftsman for a Hungarian weekly magazine.  In the 1920s, he illustrated numerous books, created bookplates and posters.  He also painted portraits, nudes as well as genre paintings and mythological scenes.  He became known primarily through his carnival motifs.  At the Berlin Academy of Arts, he studied sculpture under Fritz Klimsch and participated in the Academy exhibitions with his portrait busts and sculptures.

    Pierrot and Columbine were the names of two stock characters in the old Italian pantomime-like theatre known as del’arte Pierrot was a sad clown in love with the beautiful Columbine who breaks his heart by leaving him for Harlequin. [Wikipedia]
