Beard’s “The Bulls and Bears in the Market” | Signed by the artist in lower left of canvas | Housed in a large carved wood frame | Dimensions: 48″ H x 72″ W.
The 1879 original was painted by William Holbrook Beard, best known as an allegorical painter, born in Painesville, OH, April 13, 1824. The setting for The Bulls and Bears in the Market is Broad Street, New York City, looking north, in front of the New York Stock Exchange, which appears at the left. The Exchange moved into this building in 1865; it was enlarged and remodeled in 1870 and 1881, and was demolished in 1901. The present New York Stock Exchange stands on the same site.
