  • Italian School Oil Painting – In the Manner of Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri)Saint Pierre  (Saint Peter) | 19th century | Oil on canvas | Unframed | Dimensions: 29 7/8″ x 25 3/16″ | Provenance: Acquired through Tajan Auction House, Paris, France from Elsa Kozlowski (Medieval & Renaissance Art).

This is a remarkable and deeply moving piece.  Saint Peter’s profoundly sad and mournful gaze up to God with tearing eyes, holding what appears to be a blood stained cloth.  The work seems to show Peter’s state of mind following the death of Jesus (and his denials of Christ), looking up as if taking blame for Christ’s crucifixion.

Condition:  Good.  The painting is in generally good condition considering age.  While the canvas is still fairly bright with color and detail, there are scattered paint losses especially along his blue robe.  Saint Peter’s face seems to be unaffected and clear.  In any event, this panting is scheduled for some restoration work.  The value price is for the painting as is in its current condition.
