Very Rare Antique Map of Tennessee | A Finley folding pocket map of Tennessee circa 1830 | Anthony Finley (c.1790-1840). Tennessee. Philadelphia: A. Finley, [ca. 1830]. This Folding pocket map was engraved by Young & Delleker, with full contemporary hand-colorring. Folds into publisher’s roan covers, covers bordered in blind, upper cover titled in gilt, publisher’s ad on the inside front pastedown. (Minor separations at intersecting folds as usual). Sheet size: 8 3/4 x 11 3/8 inches. Very Good Condition.
Following the initial publications of both his New General Atlas and New American Atlas, Finley issued pocket map versions of many of his maps from those important early American atlases. This map of Tennessee appears to be printed from the same plate as his map of Tennessee which appeared in Finley’s New General Atlas of 1831, with the addition of rivers and place names to the neighboring states not found in early editions of the New General Atlas, The map was certainly issued before 1835, as neither Benton nor Lauderdale counties appear on the map. Although diminutive in size, the map still shows good detail, including principal towns, roads, and rivers, and with each county identified. In the southeast corner of the state, a large area of Cherokee lands is depicted.
