  • Amazing Recent Acquisition – Antique Original Pencil Drawing by renowned and well listed Italian artist Giorgio De Chirico (Italian, 1888 – 1978) | Metaphysical Period – Circa 1916 | Pencil on Paper | Likely created during Chirico’s “claustrophobic” period while staying in a military hospital, but certainly appears to bridge between The Disquieting Muses (1916) with “Great Metaphysical Interior” (1917) | It is a wonderful example with Chirico’s customary small narrowing room with ceiling beams and a single window outside of which are Chirico-like buildings. Inside the room is a surrealist figure with a mannequin-like head sitting among a mixed group of objects, including the wooden triangles found in paintings such as “Metaphysical Interior with Workshop | Possibly a much earlier study that was revisited later in his career with “Metaphysical Vision of New York” (1975) | Signed by the artist in the lower right of the image “g. de Chirico” | Matted and framed under glazed glass | Approx. Dimensions: Sight 13″ H x 9.25″ W; Framed 22″ H x 17.75″ W | Provenance: Private collection, New York, New York | | Giorgio de Chirico (Italian, 10 July 1888 – 20 November 1978) was an Italian artist and writer. In the years before World War I, he founded the scuola metafisica art movement, which profoundly influenced the surrealists. After 1919, he became interested in traditional painting techniques, and worked in a neoclassical or neo-Baroque style, while frequently revisiting the metaphysical themes of his earlier work.
