Carlo Crivelli (Venice 1430 – Ascoli Piceno 1495) was an Italian Renaissance painter of conservative Late Gothic decorative sensibility, who spent his early years in the Veneto, where he absorbed influences from the Vivarini, Squarcione and Mantegna. He left the Veneto by 1458 and spent most of the remainder of his career in the March of Ancona, where he developed a distinctive personal style that contrasts with that of his Venetian contemporary Giovanni Bellini.

The panel of the Madonna and Child in the Worthington Galleries’ Collection closely resembles several of Crivelli’s original works, and has been featured along side other works attributed to Crivelli (e.g. Sotheby’s;  See MutualArt Here – https://www.mutualart.com/Artwork/MADONNA-AND-CHILD/BAEBC5524377F788

This beautiful Alter Piece is extremely similar in style, composition, medium and support to numerous painted panels by Crivelli.  In fact, The Madonna and Child were the primary subject of numerous alter panels created by Crivelli.  The following are a few examples:

Additionally, the present painting resembles the central panel of Italian Renaissance master Carlo Crivelli’s famous Camerino Triptych (Triptych of Saint Domenico, 1482-83) in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, Italy. The original altarpiece was acquired by the Pinacoteca from the Church of San Domenico in Camerino in 1811 when Napoleon Bonaparte’s spoliations were returned to Italy.  Crivelli’s famous triptych remains on display in Milan today.
