  • Very nice original 18th Century Leather Bound Book entitled “Twelve Sermons Preached on Several Occasions” by the famed 18th Century Rev. William Lupton, D.D. (1676 – 1726) | Published in 1729 by W. Bowyer in London, “for T. Worrall, at the Judge’s-Head, over-against St. Dunstan’s-Church in Fleetstreet. MDCCXXIX” | Book is a very rare copy of its first edition and first printing | Reverend Lupton is described as the “Late Prebend of Durham, and Preacher to the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s-Inn.”

    Fully Bound in Tooled Calf Leather with a five ribbed spine which has a handwritten title of “Lupton Sermons” (See Photographs) | Leather binding and spine is intact and tight for its age | Printed on watermarked laid paper (See Photographs) | The Frontispiece is a very nice portrait engraving of the author “Gulielmus Lupton S.T.D.” with “G. Vertue Sculp. 1727″ in the lower right corner of the plate.  The book’s pages, including the title page, are in remarkable condition for the age of the book | Measures 8″ H x 5.5” W.

    Books contains the only 12 remaining sermons that exist of Lupton’s numerous messages delivered in England – “After what has been stated in p. 140, it may not be im­proper to observe, that most of these Sermons were preached on particular public occasions, and some of them had already been printed; so that the Doctor’s direction for destroying his Ser­mons was in some degree  complied with; Twelve only having been snatched from destruction.” Literary Notes of the Eighteenth Century; Comprising Biographical Memoirs of William Bower, Printers, F.S.A., Volume I, 1812.
