16th Century Illuminated Sacred Music Manuscript – “Vexilla Regis” on Vellum

This item is a 16th century Illuminated Sacred Music Manuscript. The Manuscript is of the VEXILLA REGIS, a Latin hymn in long metre by the Christian poet Venantius Fortunatus, Bishop of Poitiers. It takes its title from its opening stanza: “Vexilla regis prodeunt, fulget crucis mysterium, quo carne carnis conditor, suspensus est patibulo”.  This Original hand written Latin Chant is on Vellum | The chant is listed in the Cantus Index with Cantus ID 008410; H Genre – Hymn and Hymn Verse, and pertaining to the Dom. de Passione – 5th Sunday of Lent (Passion Sunday).

Its takes its title from its opening stanza: “Vexilla regis prodeunt, fulget crucis mysterium, quo carne carnis conditor, suspensus est patibulo” – which translated means “The banners of the king issue forth, the mystery of the cross does gleam, where the creator of flesh, in the flesh, by the cross-bar is hung.”

    This Original hand written Latin Chant is on Vellum | The chant is listed in the Cantus Index with Cantus ID 008410; H Genre – Hymn and Hymn Verse, and pertaining to the Dom. de Passione – 5th Sunday of Lent (Passion Sunday).

    The pages are matted in black and housed in a gold tone frame behind archival glass. The left panel features the first phrases of the chant accompanied by the sheet music to go along with it. The right panel features the remaining stanzas of the chant.   The Dimensions are  29.75″ x 38.5″.  The Condition of the Manuscript is Excellent.
