Very Rare Original 1635 First Edition of Salomon Sive Commentarius in Proverbia Salomonis, in duas partes divisius [Commentary on the Proverbs of Solomon, in two parts], written by R. P. Cornelius Cornelii a Lapide (1567-1637). Published in Paris on July 16, 1635 by French printer Sébastien Cramoisy (1584-1669), the royal printer (regius typographus). It is complete with the original two volumes combined to create this large folio edition, with 524 engraved leaves. Each part is followed by an index verum et verborum, with the second part also having an Index locorum Sacræ Scripturæ. An ex-libris of Rev. F. Zabler, or Francis Zabler, is present to the front pastedown. Rev. Zabler was the third pastor of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Louisville, Kentucky, from 1888 to 1905.
This folio is bound with vellum covered wood and metal latches, also having raised bands and hand-written title to the spine. A sizable tipped-in and engraved frontispiece is present, bearing the title, author, and printing information. Engravings are present throughout this volume at the beginning and end of each book, as well as other locations throughout. Pages of this volume are numbered in print, with the exception of indexes. Numbered: 1-385 in part one, with pagination errors on pages 279-280, 290, and 322-323; 1-558 in part two, with pagination errors on pages 129-130, 234, and 330. Numbers 528-533 are omitted in pagination, however, all pages are present. 524 leaves are present in this complete volume. Approx. Size: 14.25″ H x 9″ W x 3″ D | Exterior has small insect boreholes, chipped corners with exposed boards; chipping to spine tail; hand-written title to spine; missing one metal latch.
