17th Century Handwritten British Marriage Indenture
-
33.25″ x 26.5″ | 17th Century | British | Indenture | Vellum | Handwritten | Framed
This is a preserved 1664 handwritten British indenture on vellum. Though most indentures of this time were legal contracts that binded indentured servants, this particular piece seems to be a marriage contract between Sir William Wilson and an unknown woman. There are embellishments that cover the upper left corner of the page and a wavy line is cut across the top of the page. This is because these documents were written duplicate on the same sheet and separated by cutting along a jagged line, then lined back up together to ensure authenticity. This indenture is in a thin black wooden frame and behind a glass covering.
