Description
Additional information
  • Very Large 17th Century Oil Painting from the School of GUERCINO (GIOVANNI FRANCESCO BARBIERI) (ITALIAN, 17TH CENTURY), SAINT JEROME SEALING A LETTER.  This amazing painting is a remarkable oil copy of Guercino’s original, attributed to a follower of Guercino.  Oil on Canvas.  Unframed. Dimensions of Painting Only:  51.5 x 55.5 inches.

Condition:  Fair.  The painting is in fair condition considering its approx. 400 year old age.   The canvas has darkened over time with yellowing and degradation of the varnish layer.  Our restoration department believes the varnish is a Mastic oil-resin varnishes (Merrifield 1849, ccliv), with these varnishes being widely used in the 16th and 17th centuries (Armenini [1586] 1977, 195–6; Merrifield 1849, 670).  We believe the painting’s vibrant colors can be restored.  Nonetheless, the painting’s detail is still strongly apparent. There are scattered paint losses along canvas edges likely resulting from the frame.  This panting is scheduled for some restoration work.  The value price is for the painting “as is” in its current condition.

Additional Description.  St. Jerome, nude except for a red drape billowing around his body, occupies the whole space of the painting. His legs are bent in a tour de force of foreshortening, his toes seeming to brush the edge of the picture plane. As St. Jerome affixes a seal to a document, his sinewy arm bends high over his head in a display of outstanding draftsmanship.  The brilliant lapis lazuli of the sky behind him, as well as the complexity of the positioning, leave no doubt that this is a very fine work of art, by one of the Baroque era’s greatest painters.  What is believed to be the original and only other copy of this painting is located in the Argentine Embassy in Rome, Italy.
