  • Portrait of a Horse is a rare oil painting by John Chester Mathews (1850-1900), a 20th century British artist who specialized in equine subject matter. The painting in the Worthington Collection depicts a horse in a stable with a bucket lettered FS appearing on the left side of the work.  Signed and dated lower right J. Mathews 1895. Stenciled label en verso of canvas: “Prepared by Winsor & Newton, London.” Giltwood molded frame. 30″ x 21 1/4″ canvas, 33 1/2″ x 25 1/2″ framed. Condition: Painting is in very good condition with very light grime and accretions. Frame has some later regilding with scattered scuffs.
